Corporate Social Responsibility is the term used to encapsulate the actions practised by companies and organisations to benefit others. More and more companies are realising the value of operating in ways that enhance society and the environment. These are the companies that care; companies that have a heart.
The four pillars of Corporate Social Responsibility are:
Community
Supporting the local and/or trade community and helping it to flourish.
Workplace
Providing wellbeing, support and security to allow colleagues to develop their potential.
Philanthropy
Charitable activity; sponsoring good causes or local initiatives;
investing in the improvement of the area.
Environment
Reducing waste, recycling, reusing where possible – anything that helps the environment.
Businesses that practise CSR are companies that have a heart; companies that care and want to put something back into the communities, people and businesses that help them to operate successfully.
They do not necessarily seek a return on that investment of time and effort – but the payback can be beyond measure, as this true story of our own experience illustrates…
Every year we publish the CSR World Leaders work of reference on Corporate Social Responsibility best practice. We used to produce this in-house but – to practice what we preach – we decided to delegate the preparation to a self-employed individual in India. It transpired that he lived in an area rife with riots and killings. At the end of the assignment, he sent us the following letter…
Dear Mark,
I would like to once again thank you for giving me this opportunity.
The money you paid me for this project helped us come to Kolkata
during this very hard time. We owe you our lives.
If I didn’t get this job, we would be back home with a lot of trouble
and in worse conditions. In about a week, we will need to go back again
as the school will reopen soon.
Me and my wife don’t know how to express our gratitude to you
but thank you so much from our hearts. Please do remember us in your prayers.
We hope the situation gets better soon and our lives back to normal 🙏
In case the situation don’t get better,we’ll need to take another critical decision.
Best, Leb
We have since managed to give him further projects.
